Dvořák’s Legends is a cycle of ten small-scale pieces. The work was composed originally for piano duet. In 1880, the day before finishing the score of his sixth symphony, Dvořák announced his plans for this work to his publisher. He began to sketch the work in January 1881 and dedicated the composition to the famous critic Eduard Hanslick, who praised the cycle with great enthusiasm. In that same year Dvořák arranged the cycle for orchestra.
The Legends have been arranged for Bacchus by Ian Rae. We gave the first performance of Legends I, II and III in our spring concert, 2011 and the clips for these are from that concert. We also performed Legends IV, VIII, IX and X at Crowborough in 2012, and finished the cycle of ten legends at St. Stephen's Church, Tonbridge, in 2014 .
